Here are a few main points from this great discussion.

  • Just because you are doing fine without social media right now, doesn’t mean your business will always be fine without it. We get it–business is booming right now, and you don’t see why you should take time away from activities that are bringing in good business to “play around with social media.” The benefits might not seem obvious, but they are there and backed up with impressive stats to boot.
  • Worried about oversharing and annoying others? Don’t be. When used properly, sharing on social media isn’t going to clutter your feed. Instead, it will become a source of useful information that other like-minded professionals will appreciate. However, you need to have a plan, don’t just randomly share.
  • Social media can expand your network. Social media allows you to piggy-back off other people’s connections and experience. It streamlines the process of finding useful contacts. Use this to your advantage!
  • Don’t just use LinkedIn. LinkedIn has a reputation as a boring business site and gets fewer clicks whereas Facebook and Twitter are generally more interactive. In fact, research shows that while 94 percent of recruiters are on LinkedIn, only 36 percent of job seekers are. This proves there’s more reason than ever to also include Facebook and Twitter in your efforts.
  • Social media isn’t a replacement for other activities, rather it is a tool to enhance other business activities, use it to create more opportunities.
