My name is Desiree and I was stuck. I’d been in the same job and career path for almost ten years and I hadn’t even chosen it. It chose me. Years ago, it was normal to stay in the same job for decades, but I wasn’t ok with that. I’m not alone either, according to the Bureau of Labor, the average worker today stays at their job for 4.4 years.

You may be one of those people like I was, that became depressed on Sunday knowing that Monday was coming, bringing with it your duties and dry day-to-day work routine. You come home from work knowing you have to do it all over again and that alone will make you feel defeated. I sure did. I asked myself, why should I keep doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result? That’s insanity! Or is that the definition of insanity? I don’t know, either way, I just knew I had to start somewhere.

I was comfortable in my old job, but I also wasn’t happy, I felt stuck. I’ve read that if you are in a positive frame of mind, you will be more open to new experiences and more likely to act. But, how do you suddenly create a positive state of mind when you’re feeling low? I had to start making changes to my routine.

I went on LinkedIn and I started networking. There was an almost immediate feeling of gratification and accomplishment. People in different professional areas accepted my connection requests. I received offers in my inbox. I met new people in different fields. It wasn’t until then that I knew I was ready to make a change.

I called my mentor and his advice to me will forever stick with me. He said, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” After numerous interviews and meetings, I finally accepted an offer in sales and marketing as a social media consultant for ClearView Social. In all my years working in the same industry, my outlook on life has finally changed. Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways but you will never change your ways until you change your routines. For me, putting myself out there on LinkedIn and opening myself up to meet new people and discover new adventures helped me arrive where I am now.
